When I tell someone, “I’m an Instructional Designer,” I’m often met with a puzzled look—especially from educators or business professionals. But if I say, “I work in higher education,” the response usually falls into one of two categories: either they share a story about a particularly memorable (or not-so-great) learning experience, or they ask if I teach classes or work with faculty.

At the core, my role is simple: I help people do their jobs better.

With that in mind, here are three qualities I believe are essential when hiring an instructional designer.

My Approach

Shaping success with a strategic approach

I’m a strong advocate for the learner. Instructional designers must design with the learner in mind—not just for them. That means involving learners in the design process and grounding content in real-world scenarios they actually encounter.

It’s essential to use language, visuals, and contexts that feel familiar. When learners see themselves in the material, they’re more likely to connect with it. They should be thinking, “That sounds just like me!” or “I deal with that exact issue!”

When training feels relevant, learners are naturally more engaged. They see the value in the experience and become intrinsically motivated to learn. That spark of curiosity is where meaningful learning begins.

My mission is simple: to help people do their jobs better. At the heart of everything I design is a focus on performance improvement—not just course completion or test scores.

Success isn’t measured by how many people finish an LMS module or pass a quiz. It’s measured by whether learners perform better after the training than they did before. To achieve that, learning experiences must go beyond content recall or memorization—they must be rooted in real-world application.

I design scenarios that allow learners to take risks, make decisions, and even fail—safely. These experiences help them understand the real-world consequences of their choices, all within the protected environment of training.

I actively incorporate AI tools into my workflow to enhance both efficiency and creativity. Whether it’s generating content ideas, drafting assessments, or refining learning objectives, AI helps me work smarter and focus more on strategy and learner experience. I also use AI to analyze learner data and identify performance gaps, allowing me to design more targeted and effective learning interventions.

By leveraging AI responsibly, I’m able to streamline routine tasks and spend more time on what matters most: designing engaging, meaningful learning experiences that drive real performance improvement.
